    Default Grandfather research

Hi my name is Ivan and I am trying to research my Grandfather who was on board the Fort Nakasley when it docked in New York 7th May 1945.
I have very limited information about him, only his date of birth and where he was from. I thought I had his service number but a friend tells me it may be a ship number.
Any help would be very gratefully received
    Thank you

    Hello Ivan D
Please post his full name place and DOB , we can then see if we can assist in any way.
    Was he Merchant Seaman ??
    Thank You

Is this the Number you have ?
168454 If so Yes that is the Official Ships Number.

'Fort Nakasley' (1943) April 1948 in Cape Town Harbour posters & prints by unknown (rmg.co.uk)

I think he was Merchant Navy because he was on the ship Fort Nakasley in 1945 but im not positive if it was MN or RN
His name is Ronald Turtill, his date of birth was 13/04/1921 born in Nottingham
A number that was on my mums birth certificate next to his name was AB D.J.X 239839 not sure if this is a service number or a ship number
Thanks very much for any help you can offer Doc

Early days Ivan but that looks like a RN Number , i will see if i can get any info on him.

AB (Able Seaman) D.J.X 239839 The letter D i think indicates Devonport UK

I think after a bit of looking around you may have to apply yourself for his records as he was Born in 1921 ,so would be in Service later.
You can read here and there are Forms for application of the various Types
    Good Luck

RE: MN or RN? Could possibly be a Dem's gunner.

Would his Mother's Maiden Name be Hutton?

Possibly birth would be Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

    Hi Keith
    Thats my Grandad Keith. Fantastic
I got most of that off Ancestry but hadnt seen the ships manifest which is brilliant. Would have been nice to have seen a Service number and whether he was RN or MN to help with further search.
Thanks very much Keith, thats great
    Ivan
