    Hi Den
Did not call at that Port on the East Coast outward journey, but on the turn around it did, in other words when she left London again going the other way she stopped at St Helena , then Cape Town and then onwards up the East Coast towards the Suez and London.
    Thanks

St Helena was also as you well recall a beautiful little place!

    Oh the memories!!
    Cheers

St. Helena and Ascension Island were two we went to on the Pretoria way back in about 62/3
Very small dots in a very big sea.
Think ships only called there about once a month to deliver mail and other bits.

Napoleon spent time on St. Helena care of the British gov after some bit of a tiff at Waterloo I am told.

Most all of the old UCL Ships both Round Africa and Mail Runs stopped at both of the Islands either in one or other direction, plus of course Las Palmas.

I so looked forward to stopping at either of the three, as i thought that they were so beautiful, and the people always very Friendly and happy!
A world away from so many other places as far as the way they lived there.

old Napoleon as you know born in Corsica but lived on St Helena for a long time.
He was first Exiled to the Island of Elba , then later on again Exiled to St Helena, where of course he died at age 51. where he was Buried.
19 Years after, his Body was removed from the St Helena Tomb and shipped back to France where he wished to be laid to rest . So his remains now lay in the Hôtel national des Invalides (The National Residence of the Invalids)
    Cheers

Vernon mate, thank you for the link.
On it I found a 15 minute video of the Transvaal Castle, what a great bit of video it is.

Apart from one guy smoking at the bar, which now looks so odd, I found it fascinating.

I think from memory Patey was the skipper then, a shot of the chef with the Hotel manager, was at one time Chief Steward was Alvis.
he was head chef on the Windsor at one time nada pure prick to boot.
The hotel manager looked very like a guy by the name of Cooper Brown from the Windsor, he was chief steward on her.

The waitresses uniform looked very dated and not good at all.

But there was a male winger there, Jimmy Kenealy, he had been a winger on the Windsor in the tourist gallop.
One of a gang of six of us who always went ashore together, five of us looking for the Shelias, him looking for the men.
He was as gay as they come but not showy with it like some.

I notice in the building stage as shown she had what looks like a small bulbous bow, not seen that on ships of that era before, maybe this was the begining of that design. .

The video brought back some great memories, including Las Palmas.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

    Doc.

    list of UCl ships:

Warwick 4 trips, 7-3-56- 15 1-57, Dunnotter 1 trip, 17-4-57-14-6-57, Athlone, 4 trips 20-8-57 to 21-3-58. Then emigrated to Canada. Gaps in between trips plus 1 just before I went to Canada at the UCL training school at Silvertown, London.

    Cheers, Rodney

Rodders, well remember the Silver Town training center, think most new UCL catering crew were sent there.
Did about three weeks before being called to join the Windsor.
Every day had to walk the tunnel under the Thames to get there, many still use it today.
