Help please SS Empire Lancer
Hi, I am researching the names on our village war memorial and trying to find out more about Maxime Jollivet, born in Port Louis, Mauritius who served in the Merchant Navy during the war. He went from Second Mate to Master in five years, getting his Master's cert in 1920. I'd love to know how he came to be in the British Merchant Navy, what other ships he might have been with, and more about the SS Empire Lancer which was torpedoed by U-862, killing 42 of the crew (37 survived).
I'd be grateful for any help anyone can give! Thanks so much!

Re: Help please SS Empire Lancer
On 16 Aug 1944 the unescorted Empire Lancer (Master Maxime Jollivet) was torpedoed and sunk by U-862 in the Mozambique Channel. The master, 36 crew members and five gunners were lost. 34 crew members and three gunners landed 60 miles south of Lumbo, Portuguese East Africa ten days later. https://uboat.net/allies/merchants/ship/3318.html
Certain more will come.

Copies of his Master's and Mate's certificates, along with application forms detailing some 18 or 19 ships he served on, are available via Ancestry.com. There are 10 documents. Search under UK & Ireland Masters and Mates Certificates 1850-1927.
