Australian Merchant Navy 1874-1884
I am new to this group and am looking for information about my grandfather who left England as a 17 year old and entered indentured service for 4 years with a ship from Liverpool. He ended in Australia; I believe working on ships mainly between Melbourne and Sydney. I find many entries on Registries of Engagement. Can someone clarify what these registries were. How do they differ from crew lists on the various ships? Any advice would be welcomed. Thank you.

Re: Australian Merchant Navy 1874-1884
Hello Sue
Can we start with the name of the Person please and his place and DOB .
This will help us .
Do you have possibly a Picture of a Register that you could upload!
Crew Lists and Logs do i am sure differ to what you mention about Registeries, but not sure untill we can see the actual Register!
Do you have a Discharge Book at all , saying that not sure if there were in those days ??
But as said to start we will need the things asked for
Cheers
Thanks for joining
Will await your reply
So according to this the Registeries are not official Documents, and all Seamans Service Docs would be held at the National Archives!
Below is from the State Library of South Australia.
Ships and maritime history: Shipping Registers
The State Library has one of the best shipping and maritime history collections in Australia. It includes books, periodicals, newspapers, shipping registers and several substantial pictorial collections.
Merchant Navy records
The Library does not hold any official records for the Merchant Navy or the Australian Merchant Navy.
Information about official records for the Australian Merchant Navy can be found at the National Archives.
However ??
The black hole in the records: 1858-1913
Between 1858 and the First World War the Merchant Navy did not keep registers of its seamen. This means that for these years the only record you are likely to find of an individual merchant seaman is his appearance in agreements and crew lists, for which you usually need to know the names of the ships he served on.
Indexes of apprentices registered in the Merchant Navy, 1824-1910
Search by name the indexes of apprentices registered in the Merchant Navy between 1824 and 1910 (BT 150/1-53) on Ancestry (charges apply).
These index the original indentures in BT 151 and BT 152. Please note only a sample of these original indentures survive

Re: Australian Merchant Navy 1874-1884
Thank you, Doc, for your interest and information. Here is what you asked for:
My grandfather was James Henry Evans (later JHE Jones), born in Aylesbury, Bucks, 23 April 1857
Here is the indenture register that I found through Ancestry:
I have found many crew lists on ships mainly between Sydney and Melbourne, but with such a common name, I cannot be sure they are accurate.
Thanks again for any advice and your interest in helping me.
Sue

Re: Australian Merchant Navy 1874-1884
Thank you, Keith, for picking up on my query.
James Henry Evans was the son of James Henry Evans and Caroline Jenns of Aylesbury. After leaving service in Australia, he emigrated to Canada where he became a General Merchant working with his "stepfather??" R. A. Jones in London, Ontario. He married Annie Elizabeth Payn LeTouzel in Goderich, Ontario, in 1895, and began his own store in Duart, Ontario about 1900. He died in Duart in 1917. There were 5 children. He had one surviving sibling, Harriet Evans Jones who came with R.A. Jones to Canada in 1878. I can follow up with a photograph of him wearing a cap that might help, but I need to hunt it up. For now, and thanks, once again. Sue
