Sources of info on MN WW1 POW's
According to family lore, my grandfather, one James Jappy of Buckie, during WW1 while serving as Chief Engineer on a coastal vessel, was taken prisoner by a submarine which sank his ship. I have no idea on which ship he was serving, when it happened, or where he was taken prisoner. My question is to where can I direct enquiries to confirm this story. For instance, where can I get details of his service in the MN? Where can I get information on MN WW1 POW's'? Where can I get information on ships sunk during WW1 by submarines? I know there is some credibility to the story in that in the early days of the submarine campaign around the UK, the rules of engagement were such that merchant ships should be stopped and crew given time to get off the ship before it was sunk. Later in the war, unrestricted warfare was waged and ships were being sunk without warning. Compared to the armed services, war information for MN personnel does seem thin on the ground.
Any help with sources of information would be much appreciated.

Re: Sources of info on MN WW1 POW's
If it is Smith then i have the Record ,but is Royal Navy not Merchant
Cheers
However i think that this may be the one in question
James Jappy Born 29th May 1890 Buckie
Discharge Number R217687
Now if this is him then we have a start with a name of Ship, which from there once you get his Crew List from Canada if its still there, you can then trace forward or back to other Ships hopefully
Cheers
The following Links may also lead to POW info 1944
https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ils/r/C5115488
https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ils/r/C5112737
Again though only when NA opens again
Please note that there are a few names of James Jappy from Buckie listed so this may not be him,but with Serving in WW1 feel it is.

This is a Link for 1943 for the Ship Grosvenor Crew List So once Archive Reopen we can get futher

Re: Sources of info on MN WW1 POW's
Hi Vernon.
My father was in the MN in the first war, but was seconded to the RN on a T2four X or something like that. He served on Q ships, was in the crew that left on the panic boat when a U-Boat surfaced, the the ship dropped her sides and blew the sub out of the water. He once told me he felt like deserting, must have carried a lot of underpants.

Thanks all who have replied.
I will follow up your links Keith.
You have him there Doc.
I had to track down his date of birth and 29th May 1890 is it!
The name of the ship is a big step forward.
Thanks also for your links.
I am very grateful for the responses. More detailed than I expected.
All the best

Re: Sources of info on MN WW1 POW's
Link to his CRS10 should be here
https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ls/r/C10989095
As he was still at Sea in 43 he will not have had a CR10
So better still to get his CRS10.
