Default Donald Cecil Edmund Halliday 1913-2006

I am seeking information about my cousin Donald Cecil Edmund Halliday (1913-2006) who served in WW2 as a Radio Officer in the Merchant Navy. His ship, the Silverwillow, a British Motor Merchant, was torpedoed on 30 October 1942 by a German U boat (U-409) off Madeira. The master, 49 crew members, 7 gunners and 4 passengers (including one Distressed British Seaman ) were picked up by the British auxiliary patrol vessel HMS Kelantan and landed at Gourock, Scotland on 8 November. Presumably the DBS was my cousin. Donald is recorded returning from Bombay to Liverpool on the SS Drottningholm, a Swedish/American line on 27th December 1945. Donald described in a notebook how he enjoyed the time he spent in India after being torpedoed. I have been unable to find out what Donald was doing between 1942 and 1945 and why he was in India. I would also like to find out what medals he was awarded. I wondered whether anyone is able to help.

You will also need his CRS10 as that will hold his full Service Records,i will look for the Link and post soon.

I have managed to find out the following :
Donald was awarded the following medals for his war service :
    • The 1939 -1945 War Medal – awarded for all servicemen who served for 28 days during the war.
    • The 1939 -1945 Star – awarded to all servicemen who saw active service overseas.
    • The Atlantic Star – awarded mainly to Royal Navy and Merchant Navy personnel for service in the Atlantic 1939 -1945.
    • The Burma Star – for service in the Burma Campaign 1941-1945. Awarded to all three services.

Here is the card in case you dont have it
    Cheers
