    Default Seeking info - WWII

    Hello all,

I'm new here, and know almost nothing about the merchant navy. Sorry.

I'm looking for any info about my grandad. I have some details, sent to me in a genealogy group, and would love to see if anyone can fill in some blanks.
He was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire (1914), and died in Newport, Gwent (2000)

WWII Medals Issued to Merchant Seamen, 1939-1945

    Name: Harold Moss

    Birth Date: 30 Nov 1914

    Service: 1939-1945

    Medal Issued/Claimed: 1946-2002

    Discharge Number: R304771

My mum thinks he helped at Dunkirk, and also travelled the North Sea, but we've no idea of ship names, dates, ports, etc.
    Where do I start?

    Thanks in advance,
    Catherine

    Thank you very much!
My cousin (same grandad) lives near Kew. I'll send her along, if I have any difficulty.
I believe any medals will be long gone, due to sticky-fingered lodgers at his home, but it will be great to know what his involvement was.

    Hello Victoria,
I had a quick look at the tree I've built so far, but couldn't spot Frederick. He could well be a more distant cousin.
Harold's line came from Staffordshire quakers, although his dad married a non-quaker girl, which divided him from the rest of the family (so I've been told).
I'm finding it all very fascinating!

Have you any more info, where born, parents / siblings names, profession etc ?

    Hello Catherine
Once you know what medals he was entitled to you could always check that he applied for them and received them. If they have disappeared then you could get copies which are reasonably priced.
    Regards
    Brenda

    Will take a look ASAP.

Gladys and her birth date may be the key.

Will look for the wedding again ASAP.

Just to confirm: Other than the marriage in Derby, Gladys was in Kent?
Frederick William Moss is still tricky to pin down. There's a Woodward tree on Ancestry, but they have him as born in 1922 - Not possible if he was married for 12 years prior to marrying Gladys.
