Possibly worth a look at the Mormon church site.

If I remember correctly, Gladys' parents are William and Emily. He might have gone by his middle name. The Woodwards were quite easy to trace, because they stayed in the same area. In 1939, Gladys' middle initial has been transcribed as "J", rather than "I" - In case you wanted to look her up.

Do you know when and where Fred passed away? Maybe even more helpful would be his date of birth - day and month. If we can pinpoint his 1939 register entry, we'll (hopefully) find his first wife, and the rest will become clear.

    Hello Vicki,

I believe he was born 28th May 1910 in Leics, to Mabel Annie Moss.
He's living with his uncle and aunt in Leics in the 1911 census.

He married Gladys Mabel Redfern in Q1 1936, in Cubley, Derbys.
Fred and Gladys are living with her parents in 1939.
She re-married in 1950 and had a daughter.

Fred married Gladys Irene Woodward in Q2 1947, in Derby, Derbys.

Mabel's parents were Samuel Moss and Sarah Amoss, from Suffolk.
Mabel was born 1875 in Hasketon, Suffolk, the second of five children. She worked as a housemaid in London. I think she died, unmarried, in 1950, in Deben, Suffolk.

I really hope I'm on the right track. I'm completely addicted to genealogy! (And it's been a nice distraction from the brick walls I've come across in my own trees)
So, it doesn't look like Harold and Fred are closely related, after all, but genetics might find a link. I haven't dabbled with genetics... yet.

Girls were definitely sent halfway up/down the country! One of my lot was sent from Derbyshire to Dorset to have her illegitimate baby! The baby was brought up as a sibling, until the mother married.

It must have been very difficult for Mabel to leave Fred with her brother, but it seems it was planned well, because he was also Frederick.

I wonder if your Fred ever visited his Suffolk relatives. Did/does your husband even know he had great aunts and uncles in Suffolk? I have more info than the bit I wrote out, but, if you use a genealogy website, you might find that someone else has already made a correlating tree. (Someone seems to have on findmypast, but it would be more clearly laid out on Ancestry)

    Good luck with your quest!

    Hello Vicki,

OK, I've had a go at this...
If your mum is Elizabeth May b. 1921, Cardiff...
Grandfather is Alfred G Hayward b. 10th May 1881, Banbridge(?), Hants.
Grandmother is May Alice Smoker b. 26th July 1889, Southampton, Hants.
They married in Q4 1912, in Ringwood, Hants.
May Alice wasn't with her parents in 1891 (she was a one year old "visitor") in Andover, Hants. She was in school in London in 1901, then, I think, working as a cook in Dorset in 1911.

It's going to take a bit more detective work to figure out who her parents were. Also, was your mum an only child? I couldn't find any other Hayward/Smoker children. It's a big gap from 1912 to 1921. Then again, I might be barking up the wrong tree with some of it!

    Catherine

I have a theory that May Alice had a brother called Reginald. Reginald (b. 1888) was also enrolled at schools by a guardian, rather than a parent. On one of the enrolments, the guardian's name is George. On another, the address given is Old Winchester Road. George might be the brother of Charles H (Henry?) Smoker, who married Ellen (something). George is on a census at Winchester Road, Petersfield.
These are theories. You could do with help from someone in Southampton/Andover/Winchester area to check parish records and schools, etc.
Not sure if I can be of any more help.
