Sometimes they are available if you send a request to the National Archives ,but to get Papers of this sort is mostly a sort of run around task, however if one can get there in Person that is a much better idea and of course it is then free.
But yes you can apply online and normally you would get copies at a price!

The personal details can be more detailed than found on a CR1 card as they include date of birth rather than just the year, and also next of kin details for perhaps one in eight seamen. The Discharge A number may also be noted. A lot of these files in BT372 are hit and miss and sometimes hold little or no info of worth.

CRS-10 files are different to CR10. CRS-10 files hold the individuals service record, but there are no surviving records from WWI as they were all destroyed. You would be able to find his service after 1918 in the Fourth or Fifth Register, depending on when he left the MN. The Fourth Register runs until 1940 and then records were moved into the Fifth Register from 1941 onwards.
    Hello Billy
Certainly not disputing any of what you post, just want to clarify something if only for myself!
You mention that the Cert shown is only part of a BT372 ?? As I know the BT372 are only Seamans Pouches and as you say mostly contain little info on most@
The CR10 is as I know a different thing and does not attach itself to the BT372 ???
As said Billy just asking to clarify.
Thank You anyway for this post!
    Cheers

Keep up the fantastic work you do as always!

I read in your original post regarding ID and BT372 was the first thing that came to mind.

    1913 to 1940 Merchant Seaman’s Pouches

These records are held at Kew in their classification BT 372 Central Register of Seaman’s Records (“Pouches”). These are held in numerical order of the individual seaman’s discharge book (Seaman’s) number.

These pouches were a central repository for seaman’s documents; these would comprise of the many documents that the sailor would have had to submit to the Registry of Shipping over the whole of his career and copies of those documents issued to him. These would comprise of Applications for Discharge Books (including photographs of the seaman) Records of certificates issued etc. The Pouches can sometimes include records cards extracted from the Forth Register of Seaman’s Service.

Like I mentioned previous it depends on when he left the sea will determine which files his records are held in:

1913 to 1940 Fourth Register of Merchant Seaman's service.

These records are available at the National Archives at Kew and are held on Microfiche in the following classifications BT 348: Register of Seamen, Central Index, Numerical Series (CR 2), BT 349: Register of Seamen, Central Index, Alphabetical Series (CR 1) and BT 350: Register of Seamen, Special Index, Alphabetical Series (CR 10). These three classes were combined in one classification namely BT 364 Register of Seaman, Combined Numerical Index (CR1, CR 2 & CR 10) and were made up by extracting combinations of cards from the other three classes.

The original records for the above named classifications are now held at the following address: Southampton Archives, Southampton City Council, South Block, Civic Centre, Southampton, S014 7LY. This office is open Tuesdays to Fridays 9.30am to 4.30pm, with one late evening opening each month. There is no charge for a personal visit. Alternatively enquiries for information from the records may be made by post, e-mail or fax but there will be a charge for this.

1941 to 1972 Fifth Register of Merchant Seaman's Service

These records are held at Kew in classification BT 382. The Fifth Register of Seaman’s Service 1941 to 1972.

Records of individual Merchant Seamen's sea service details are held in alphabetical surname order in block of about 60 individuals and would require a visit to Kew unless you want to pay the outrageous prices. These details include the following information: Name of seaman, Date and place of birth, Discharge (Seaman’s) book number, Rank, Details of the ships on which he served. These include:

Name of ship and official number, date of engagement (Joining ship), Date of discharge (Leaving ship), whether ship was a foreign going of home trade vessel, and records in some cases National Insurance contributions. Details shown in these records are similar to those contained in an individual seaman's discharge book.
"Across the seas where the great waves grow, there are no fields for the poppies to grow, but its a place where Seamen sleep, died for their country, for you and for peace" (Billy McGee 2011)
