Re: Looking for info on father-in-law, Albert Edward Turner
Hi, Yes by golly, that does seem to match the info I have. Thank you so much.
So he was a deck boy at 16 yrs old.
Ealing would be correct and both ship's names.
Would you know if there would be any record of his time in the seaman's mission?

Re: Looking for info on father-in-law, Albert Edward Turner
If he served up until 1945 his service records should have moved up into the Fifth Register of Merchant Seaman's Service 1941 to 1972, held in file BT 382/1831 covering the surnames "Turner Ada M to Turner Dugald" These files hold information on up to 60 individuals so would require a visit to Kew unless you want to pay the outrages research funds they offer.
The Fifth Register of Seaman’s Service 1941 to 1972.
Records of individual Merchant Seamen's sea service details are held in alphabetical surname order. These details include the following information: Name of seaman, Date and place of birth, Discharge (Seaman’s) book number, Rank, Details of the ships on which he served. These include: Name of ship and official number, date of engagement (Joining ship), Date of discharge (Leaving ship), whether ship was a foreign going of home trade vessel, and records in some cases National Insurance contributions. Details shown in these records are similar to those contained in an individual seaman's discharge book.
Re: Looking for info on father-in-law, Albert Edward Turner
Hi Doc
He died in 1974.
The numbers of the ship's? How do I use the numbers to identify which ships he sailed on. Sorry to be dim but I have no knowledge of Merchant naval records or shipping.
Can you explain what a CR2 record is?
It is exciting to know he went to sea at the age of 15.
Would you know where I should go to find out more information on his service records or war service?
He also worked for the National union of Seaman at Tilbury during the 1950's as, I believe, secretary of the union.
Once again, thank you all for your help!
David

Hi David
The Numbers are available on a site called Miramar Ship Index which is a Pay site ,but well worth it for researchers.
It will give you all the details of the Ships in question when you Enter a Ships Official Number.
