Re: Looking for information on my grandfather
Possibly this is him?
This is the Link to his Seamans Pouch which will have limited info, you will need his CRS10 for full details of Ships etc.
Cheers
Re: Looking for information on my grandfather
Yes! Thats him, thanks.
Whats a crs10?
*edit*
Just found more information
It turns out he worked for bp from 58-68 in the mn, before becoming a government inspector, inspecting ship's such as the waverly and qe2
Re: Looking for information on my grandfather
A CRS10 ( Central Register of Seaman) is a Document Series that holds most all information on a Seamans past records and would contain a lot of info on the person,i will look it up and see if i can locate it for you
Cheers
Re: Looking for information on my grandfather
His full record of Service would be found at the Following link in this Series so if you want it you will have to go in Person to the Archives in Kew,as this is the best way. Asking for the info online is very hit and miss ,this has been found. Good Luck
You can try and request a copy online and see what comes back,it will cost you about
8 GBP for the request and then not sure as to how much after! You would have to give as much info as you can with both his Seamans Pouch Reference Number and the CRS10 Reference plus as said as much as you can.
And only request the Pages that refer to him, otherwise you will land up with Hundreds of pages, and a massive Bill.

Added Just of interest he must have joined shortly before me as his Discharge Number is close to mine. And as you mention 1958 that too was the Year I joined the Merchant Navy.
I think if you are really wanting all his Records,it would be well worth your while to take
a Trip from Scotland to London, possibly stay over the one Night (A Weekday ) then you could do all the research there and then, and it wont cost you anything, possibly only for the use of the Copier, and the Records you want to Copy, that is very little compared to doing it any other way.
We encourage you to visit The National Archives, where you can
do your research and view documents free of charge. If you want to pay someone to carry out the research on your behalf instead, you can use an independent researcher or our own paid search service.
Re: Looking for information on my grandfather
Thanks for the speedy reply, I was just in london, so thats my perfect sense of timeing right there.
I think I will try one of the researching companies and see what comes up
Thanks again
Fergus
Re: Looking for information on my grandfather
They can work out a lot more than another trip to London Fergus!
But of course its your decision!
Good Luck.
As said you can first try and contact the Archives through that Link and ask the questions it will only set you back the Initial Eight Quid, then if you don't want to carry on from what they may send you back then there is no more to Pay unless you carry on!
Cheers
Keep us posted on what happens anyway.
