If this was prior to 1970 then , I would say there is a strong possibility it was a British Registered ship then. If he was master he did not require a discharge in his book. If any other rank would of been loath to have it put in his book as would probably have been investigated by the Shipping federation before sailing on a British ship again. JS
Found it

Matt have you seen the latest posts ?
Thank you Francisco, but the " Valdivia " that Matt was looking for was a Bulk Carrier with the ON of 385175 and a Gross Tonnage of 35,522 which IMO 7929968 fulfills.
Valdavia blt 1981 Namura shipyard Japan for Aiden shipping Ltd (Harrison's clyde managers) from a curious venture Ian harrison s history of the compamy
I think Matt may be looking for Valdivia, a bulk carrier built for Harrisons(Clyde) Ltd at Namura Shipyard in Japan in 1981. She was a sistership to Voreda, built at the same time. I sailed on her as Master from 21/11/84 to 19/5/85. Her ON was 385175. These were two brilliant ships and were meticulously maintained throughout. At the same time one of my fellow Masters was a Matt Lindsay, I wonder if there is a connection?
Hi Robert.
Welcome to the site. It looks like Matt has struck gold.
