    Now i am confused

    Your Post reads

I am trying to find out if my father served on the SS Empire Tide during 1942.His name was Eric Herbert Knight and was
    born in Chatham in 1920
    and died in 1977

it seems that he wasn't the right Eric Herbert Knight as I was born in 1950.

Now who is who and what is what ???? Please clarify

This all ties up with your info??
    Cheers

    Doc
Don't see the confusion. In the pic the inscription is obviously given to the dead.I've got to assume, unless you know different,he died in service during the war.If this is the case then he couldn't have been the same Eric Herbert Knight because,as stated in previous post,I was born in 1950.I am hoping my assumption is wrong as the record I found was the only one for his name.Which means back to square one.

    Thanks for your time

My maternal Grandfather Ivor Tilley DSM served on the SS Empire Tide during PQ17 convoy 1942. He was awarded the DSM. Unfortunately, the story of how he was awarded the DSM has been lost, with very few accounts of the SS Empire Tides' journey and the role individuals played. I have managed to piece together some elements through Paul Lund and Harvey Ludlam book PQ17 convoy to hell (1969) and I was there On PQ17 the convoy to hell (2010). Ivor was a donkeyman and greeser although not sure what this entailed and how he earned the Distinguish Service Medal. The London Gazette gives scant details. Unfortunately, he died in 1962 when I was 3 and the story with him.

#15.. I rather think the DSM is an investiture medal and if it is , it will be recorded in the Grand Chancellory Records
I don’t know if outsiders can view such recordings , but being family I don’t see why not. I can’t find the book I have on Palace Awards at the moment but when I trip over it will send you what it says. Although you will probably get better advice from others before that. Mine is if all else fails. Regards JWS.

Steven , finally tripped over the small booklet I have and whilst can’t repeat all its contents on here will give you relevant exerts from,
The Medals are as shown at an Investiture ..
    The Victoria Cross
    The George Cross
    The George Medal
    Royal Red Cross
    Distinguished Service Cross
    Military Cross
    Distinguished Flying Cross
    Air Force Cross
    Military Medal
    Queens Gallantry Medal
    Polar Medal.
So if yours not there will have to apply I would imagine to the MOD.
As Regards. The Orders of Chivalry which most people don’t really understand . Each Order has I believe a designated number that are allowed to be distributed , so means someone may have to wait for someone to die to be able to receive,
E.G. The Order of Merit is regarded as the most covetous decoration, besides carrying neither rank nor title. It’s membership is limited to 24.
The Order of the Companions of Honour is restricted to 50 members.
The common one for most people is the British Empire and different ranks of such have different numbers of acceptance which probably runs into many hundreds.
The member rank is mainly awarded for service to the arts , literature, science and sport. And to members of the Merchant Navy, The special Constabulary. The top class of this Order is limited to
27 Military, and 73 Civil members.
As Churchill said as the forward of this book also..
The object of presenting medals , stars and Ribbons is to give pride and pleasure to those who have deserved them.... In a speech to the House of Commons , March 1944.
    Regards JWS

On 21 July the Empire Tide set course for Archangel, which port she reached without further incident on the 24th. Then in the second week of September, she undertook the return voyage to the U.K. Empire Tide's Master, Captain F. W. Harvey, was awarded the D.S.O., while Hughes and his fellow engineer officer received the D.S.C.; three members of her crew were awarded D.S.M.s and two others the B.E.M. Four of these recipients were also received the Lloyd's War Medal for Bravery at Sea: Just 104 of the latter being awarded in the last war.

Just an observation the DSOs DSCs DSMs are usually associated with military medals. The BEMs usually civilian.
DSO Following the Crimean and the Indian mutiny , Queen Victoria instituted the DSO. Awarded for gallantry or for distinguished service in the face of the enemy. Eligibility was extended to the Merchant Navy in 1943.
Nominations may only be made for those mentioned in dispatches.
The DSC founded by Edward V11 in 1901. Originally designed for conspicuous service , and became available for all Naval and Marine officers below Lt. Commander.
The BEM is associated with the Order and for those who already hold the medal , several bars may be attached. Since 1957 medals awarded for acts of Gallantry , as. Opposed to merituous service, have been distinguished by the addition of an emblem composed of two silver oak leaves.
