Not just your family Kathryn, many young lads (14/15 yrs old) tried to join up in WWII, some made it some didn't, we had more join the MN where not too many questions were asked as during the first year of WWII MN seamen were being lost at an alarming rate, so they needed bodies to meet crewing requirements, so if you said you were 16 or 17 they took it at face value. Many youngsters were lost, some on their first rip.

Re: Kiwi needs some help please!
A few things to remember when looking at Merchant Navy records. I note people picking up on the date 1921. It says on the CR2 card '1921' which in this case is not significant. The CR2 cards only survive from the year 1921 that's all, it has nothing to do with any event relevant to this seaman. This seaman referred to in the original post is actually Charles Peco Maloney b. 1911 in South Shields, Durham. So is not the man that Kathryn is seeking.
For Kathryn, At the moment I cannot find any reference to Charles John Maloney from London in the Merchant Navy. That does not mean he didn't serve in same but records may not be online. Do you have any further evidence of service in the MN other than that CR2.
Regards
Hugh

Re: Kiwi needs some help please!
No, just the posted copy of tag/form with 1931 MMO Sunderland stamp. A few others in family have been in Merchant Navy so thought it might be him? Trying to find out why he was not talked about by my Grandmother's ( his older sister) family. Trying to trace his movements from birth 1907 to Marriage 1940.

They have my Great Grandfather name also John Smith with wrong birth date listed , I blew up original census document and you can see it says 25 not 35 for age. 1901 they lived 54 Thomas Street, Whitechapel. John Smith my grandfather appears in both these but not 1911 as from what you found would explain this
I will reply more fully a bit later.
Currently copying all on both to two separate documents.
This is only to aid myself.

This would be of interest, I have not discovered anything yet on Emily or the marriage.

Re: Kiwi needs some help please!
Hello Everyone
Just had another Chat with my 86 year old mother about Charles John. Seems he WAS known to her but as Uncle Johnny so when I said his name was Charles it didn't ring any bells and she thought it was the uncle whom went up north and they didn't know. It seems Charles John Maloney was a greengrocer's assistant and married Annie Smith , daughter/sister ? of the greengrocer. So sorry for the confusion but this can happen when a family member remembers someone by their second name and not their christian name.
So Keith maybe the WW2 details about Charles John Maloney you were looking at could be relevant? Thank you for your help everyone. Will be in touch again soon as just finalising family members whom were in Royal Navy and Merchant Navy.

Re: Kiwi needs some help please!
No worries and thanks for the update, we often tell those that enquire,
that any information however minor is relevant.
Hope that all the pieces come together ASAP.
I can look at all again from another angle.
Regards Keith.
