If he was born in 1923 and he joined the MN when he was 16, that would make it 1939 when he joined his first vessel, yes he was in the MN if he was a messroom boy (commonly known aboard as a 'Peggy'). He would not necessarily have needed a birth certificate to join the MN in 1939 as a state of emergency existed from 9/39, the Forces would required proof of D O B, but even this could be circumnavigated if required. The MN had no such scruples and many 15 year olds joined in 1939/40 as they needed bodies to make up the manning scales. He probably applied for a birth certificate in 1943 for issue of a MN ration book which entitled MN on leave to extra rations, without the MN endorsed rationbook then he would not have received the extra allowance. Or maybe he wanted his BC to enable him to join the Forces, but that theory holds little water, because upon joining the MN he would have a Discharge Book and his DOB would have shown that and in 1943 he would at 20 be old enough to join, unless he had any physical disabilities that precluded him from joining the Forces.

Thank you Ivan! It states on a Barnardos record that 30.05.40 for £4.10. 0 per month started as mess room boy serving on the Atheltemplar. I just find it rather bizarre that we can find no record of his employment from this time, only a seaman's pouch which dates later on in the 1940s. Interesting though about the MN ration book though!

Don't know if this will be of help ,possibly?
There are Crew Lists for that Ship at the Archive Section of the Canadian University ,however they show dates up to 1938,this does not nean that they possibly may have others to 1940.the only way is to ask them by writing (Email) and requesting that info.

Another point I forgot to mention about the MN Ration Book was the Clothing Coupons there-in this was to assist in survivors of sinkings in WWII to purchase replacement clothes that had been lost, in addition they were allowed an extra 2oz of sugar and butter per week to help build them up again, as far as I have been able to ascertain this was the total largesse from the Government for the sacrifices made
