Further information received on Ronald 'Larry' Lane.
From the information on the Dundrum Castle we were able to cross-check his signature with the marriage certificate. It is without doubt the same person as the information given also mentioned the Anglo Saxon as his previous ship. It also stated that he was released from his posting in Durban, South Africa in May 1936 as a result of an injury sustained on-board the Dundrum Castle. It gives his initials as R. H. L. Lane.

I was then able to discover his return voyage to England on the Windsor Castle (described as a distressed seaman) in June 1936. He gives his name on this document as Ronald Hector Lane & the address of his nearest relative is the same as that given on the Dundrum Castle.

The next trace that I have of him is an advertisement in a Sydney, Australia newspaper requesting information on a missing person, namely Ronald Hector Lambert Lane. So I am concentrating my research on Australia now, but it is tough going with all the name changes Lord knows what alias he was using.

Anyway there is some progress, but painfully slow.

I appreciate your kind help in this matter.

the progress is slow & the process painful but at least we know more than we did when we started. Your hint on the database in Newfoundland was especially helpful.

I can find no evidence of him coming to Australia but there must be port entry data somewhere, but not accessible over the internet. It is too prohibitive to pay for further crews lists without knowing he was actually on the ship in question. Any other ideas that might help me would be most welcome.

In Sydney and Melbourne there are national libraries with archives.
It may be worth a try to see if you can look through some of the old copies of the papers such as the Age in Melbourne or Sydney Morning Herald.
Some can be done on line and it is worth a try, I used the system to find info going back to the 50's.

Many thanks to all who have helped in this quest. Good news is that we have tracked Ronald via a throw away line in a letter to my aunt that he had a sister (Mrs Armstrong) in Sydney. We found that sister did indeed live in the place he stated but her maiden name was Sharpe not Lane. On further research we found that she was born in Marylebone, London & lo & behold she had a brother Ronald Hector Lambert Sharpe!!! No wonder Ronald Lane was so difficult to track!!

The whole Sharpe family emigrated to Sydney via Melbourne, Australia in 1906. We have found out quite a lot more about the family members excepting for Ronald. There may even be living relatives to contact. Not sure if we will ever find Ronald but my cousin is extremely happy with the new info.

I would like to publicly thank Marian Gray who spent many hours researching & who many times kept me going when I thought it was a hopeless case.
