There are four family trees on Ancestry with your grandfather's details, unfortunately none offering any further information than you have been given already by Brian, Keith or myself. Sorry.

No worries Helen, there are a few on site that have access to differing areas and hopefully, between us we can assist further. Marian has assisted you so far and I am certain Doc will look in.
I hope to take a further look this evening.
Please keep looking in and updating.
As you are aware, often the smallest piece of information helps.
Regards Keith.

Re: Request for help - Richard Eric Thorn
Spent a bit of time looking at the archives, not my forte, drew a blank.
With the updated year of date, guess his service began after 1941.
Have been looking at: United Kingdom, Merchant Navy Seamen Records, 1835-1941 ...
Hopefully, Doc will look in and help.
There must be medal entitlement etc.
Taking the year of birth as 1926, looking at age 16 minimum, gather his service would have been mid to the end of WW2 ?
Keith.
