Have not been able to find any other info on your gt,grandfather yet. Did your family consider that he may have tried to return to Italy? Were siblings interred alongside him?
Thanks Marian! These suggestions are really useful.
I'm aware that there are Medinellis still in Greenock and I presume they are related but we haven't been in contact yet. The name is not that common, which makes things a bit easier! My grandmother was put up for adoption in 1920/1921 and never knew her real parents - they must have been very young. I don't know whether my great grandfather knew my grandmother existed or not.
I don't think there were any siblings as I can't find any other records for the same surname. I could be wrong though! I can't find any mention of Italo after the note dated 1943, he seems to just disappear. On the other hand, many of the records I have stumbled across have spelt his name in various incorrect ways: Medenilli, Medmelli... so there could be records hiding somewhere under some strange spelling. I find that checking the box that searches for variants of the name just returns everything beginning with M, and there are tens of thousands of records!

Hi Ali, Do you have your gt,grandfather's birth cert? It should show his parent's names, then hopefully I could confirm by census as to siblings, and then if they too travelled, could lead us towards him. If as you say your gt, grandfather was unaware of his daughter he could have went anywhere after internment. Trick is finding him Still looking..
As to your grandmother, formal adoption did not exist in Scotland till 1930. However if any child for whatever reason had to be given up it was usually arranged through their Church or Priest initially, or a family connection or even a neighbour who would raise the child. Dr Barnardo is a possibility and worst case scenario was the "poor house". However the Italian community like any other was/is very tight in Scotland and doubt that would have been allowed to happen. A child where possible was reared with someone who had background knowledge of their parentage. [All three examples occurred in my family too.]
If you supply your grandmothers name & dob, will check Baptism records. The easiest and quickest option is for you is to contact the cafe family in Greenock first & foremost, if no connection then you would have to pursue the community route or libraries mentioned, they may have additional info or ideas to guide you.

I would try to contact the current Italo Medinelli, Born in February 1983.
I would imagine there would be a strong family link and this chap continues his name ?
Nothing concrete but, he may be interested and know more ?

Hi Marian,
No as far as I know he was born in Italy, so have not been able to find a birth certificate for him. I have looked for travel records for him arriving in the UK but haven't been able to find any. We have a copy of my grandmother's birth certificate, and correspondence relating to her adoption, plus some information that was passed down verbally so we know quite a lot about that.
Thanks for all your help!
Ali

#26, Hi Ali,To obtain a birth cert for Italo you might have to know which Rocchetta he came from.
Rocchetta (meaning little fort in Italian) may refer to any one of many towns in Italy.
comuni
Rocchetta a Volturno, in the Province of Isernia
Rocchetta Belbo, in the Province of Cuneo
Rocchetta di Vara, in the Province of La Spezia
Rocchetta e Croce, in the Province of Caserta
Rocchetta Ligure, in the Province of Alessandria
Rocchetta Nervina, in the Province of Imperia
Rocchetta Palafea, in the Province of Asti
Rocchetta Sant'Antonio, in the Province of Foggia
Rocchetta Tanaro, in the Province of Asti
frazione
Rocchetta di Cerreto, part of Cerreto di Spoleto in the Province of Perugia
Probably best to enquire first at the Italian Consulate in Glasgow, the United Kingdom Honorary consulate 24 St Enoch Square Glasgow G1 4DB United Kingdom [as before], 0141 227 8051,save a lot of hassle & red tape.
As Keith says there is only one Italo Medinelli,in Greenock, will send his address in a pm shortly.
Searched last night for census records world wide from 1940's-70's - zilch, he could have course changed his name, jumped ship, or died on board whilst employed and would have been buried at sea.
