Shell Tanker: SS Astrella 1969/1970
Hi my name is Joanne. At the time I was born and my parents married, 1969/1970 my dad was serving on the SS Astrella.
I was always fascinated by dad's time at sea, and I loved to see his old jacket and cap... Sadly both of which went missing 😕
Dad often told us funny anecdotes from ship life. But it's only now I have old letters that I know at least one of the ships he served on.
It would be lovely to hear from anyone who knew him.
Anthony (Tony) Parkin
He would have been around 30 at that time
Shell Tanker: SS Astrella
I'm pretty sure he said he was pilot? (Not entirely sure on that one)
Many thanks
Joanne

Re: Shell Tanker: SS Astrella 1969/1970
Joanne,
There isn't a Shell Tanker Astrella but there is one Asprella, here is a photograp of her..helderline.nl-asprella-(1)-10433.jpg. She was built in 1959, discarded in 1982. I was on her sister ship the Achatina,a few years before your dad, she was a very nice ship. The photograph shown doesnt do her justice as she ooks like she needs a good paint job. If you go to Hedder Line (google it) type in her name and it shows a lot of information including some crew members around the time your dad was on her.
Hope thats of some help. Good Luck.

Welcome Joanne
Hope that you may get some luck later with more replies!
Where was your Dad Born? He must have been born about 1940 ?+-
I ask as his Seamans Papers may still be available at Kew!
There are quite a few listed there but cannot pick the correct one without the Place of Birth!
And possibly the Year! This would give you something to remember him by too!
Cheers
