Hello: I'm looking for infor on my Grandfather
I'm new here and I'm hoping someone can help me trace my grandfather. Henry Hall was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1896. The last information we have on him is some papers saying he was assigned to a merchant ship called "S.S. Essex Envoy" in 1931. He disappeared after that and I'd like to find out what happened to him.
Thank you.
Sandy

RE: The SS. Essex Envoy
Providing some info initially from the old site: I did then provide a pic to the site of the ship.
Possibly Mike Hall could locate it ?

Will search my archive otherwise.

Essex Envoy: 1922
Essex Steam Ship Co. Ltd / Essex Line Ltd. (Meldrum & Swinson) 1909-1945:
Harrison Meldrum started in 1909 the Essex Steam Ship Company Ltd by purchasing a second hand steamer. In 1911 Meldrum & Seinson was formed and a new tramp ship was ordered, in 1914 a second newbuilding joined the fleet.
In 1916 two ships were sold to London owners and one was also lost that year. After 1917 the company did not own any ships.
In 1921 the company was reformed as the Essex Line Ltd. and Essex Transport & Trading Co. Ltd. and several second hand ships were purchased in 1922 and 1923.
The company owned five tramp ships around 1935-1936. One ship was stranded in 1937 and sold to Japan in 1938 and three ships were also sold in that year.
Only one ship was owned at the start of World War II and she was lost in 1943. One ship was managed from completion in 1944 till the end of the war for the Ministry of War Transport.
After World War II the Essex Line Ltd. and Essex Transport & Trading Co. became dormant companies until the Essex Transport & Trading Co. was sold and the Essex Line Ltd. was purchased by Maersk Line in 1988.
Essex Envoy: 1922
Built by F. Schickau, Danzig | ex- Therese Horn, 1923 purchased from H.C. Horn, Flensburg renamed Essex Envoy, 1939 sold to Seereederei Frigga AG, Hambur renamed Hermod, 1940 damage by grounding, repaired, several times damaged in the war, repaired and back in service in 1950, 1957 laid up, 1958 scrapped.
Hopefully, building up the basics and will look further in the morning,
K.

Thanks for your help.. I guess I'm looking for a crew list, to see if he is on it. I also have a letter that my grandfather sent to my grandmother, and it has the heading of the SS Francis Massey. But we have no paperwork (yet) to say he was assigned to that ship.

Hello Sandy and welcome,
His service indicated on the CR10 is as follows:
136712 - MASSIS - date of engagement 23/4/1919
127965 - LUCIGEN - date of engagement 7/2/1920
142868 - DALWORTH - date of engagement 16/3/1921
112703 - CARDIUM?? (guess) - date of engagement 20/7/1921
149491 - ASHLEA probably 10/4/1930
No mention of 147599 - ESSEX ENVOY but those cards were prone to errors and omissions. I note you only show two cards are you aware FMP shows three for him?
He saw service in WW1 as this appears to be his medal card held at Kew in BT 351/1/56485 and downloadable for £3.36 - Medal Card of Hall, Henry Place of Birth: Newcastle Date of Birth: 1896 | The National Archives
If he served on ESSEX ENVOY in 1931 the crew agreement is held at the Maritime History Archive in Canada under official number 147599 here: https://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/view...cial_No=147599
Regards
Hugh
