Revised curry

In the morning around 6AM the Bhandari who cooked for the firemen cooked stuffed Porathas , best food snack ever ,

Rob, I sailed for about 2 years with Lascar crews, when you say Bhandari, all the familiar names come flooding back. Serang Tindal Kalassi 1 and 2, Topaz. Secunny. Phrases like Top Dekka. meaning go and get the log reading, usually mounted at the stern, although have seen on a boom from the wing of the bridge. Courses would have to think about but sure they would come back. Oh and the rank of winch driver was among Indian crews, all he did was open and close a valve on the control on a steam winch. Thinking back though he may have also been responsible for painting same. Forgot also the Cassab the storekeeper. Used to be down by the head with them unlike a British ships at the time. Like many I never tasted curry until goint to sea. It was the second chef in the tourist gallop who got me onto it, best one ever was in the Durban Indian market. But now I have to make my own as none of the local restaurants make it hot enough, but then again no one else will eat mine.

Doc. I may just drop in one of these days and try yours, I was around your area back in 2000 (the year of the Olympics) just driving around on holiday, lovely country area although not much changed since i first visted back in 1956.

It appears we all were introduced to delicious, or in some cases not curry at sea, I too. Most seemed to be made from left over meat usually from memory served on a Monday? But the vegetable ones were I think uncooked before being curried?
We enjoy curry though must say the condoms, ciggie butts story was a worry kinda reminds me of the stories of some local Chinese restaurants. Though don't think we knowingly or I have eaten a curry from such an establishment but who knows? ):
My first trip to sub continent was to Bangladesh, or East Pakistan. I really enjoyed their curries guess it was the first time I had authentic curry? When I was introduced to Malay curry I feel in love well with all Malay food, just so delicious. Thai I-we can take or leave feel it is most overrated Asian food in Asia. Indonesia has some top curries & their food is to us also delicious.
We cook a mean curry & both love Indian vegetable curries along with fish. Not mad keen on super hot Vindaloo though feel the serious heat detracts from the taste that is just a personal thing.

Not just curries, when we went to sea, late 40's early 50's we were introduced to all kinds of food we hadn't experienced ashore because of rationing etc, a whole new world opened up for us, including culinary delights, Sunday dinner everyday and Christmas dinner once a week, the only curry I didn't like was the curry favour. When I lived in Pakistan, the Pakistanis could never understand why curries in the UK were so hot, as real curries are about flavour and not burning your tongue

Hindi... again, As most will know Asti Asti means easy, and Jildy Jildy means quickly, when the likes of heaving on a mooring line on the windlass or mooring winch. Wonder how many have made the mistake and said Jiggy Jiggy instead, and wonder what the Kalassi has thought of these strange people. John Sabourn

Hi Shipmates, I will not go out for a curry, "the reason"? My mate had a building company sometimes I would lend a hand, he had a urgent job a takeaway , only a small job tiles kicthen units replaced and some pipe work small leak, The place was mankey grease /droppings/ dirty every where rats /mice bugs e.t.c and cats about 8 of them!!! he bought time dated chicken cheap frozen, which he put into plastic buckets/bowls on floor to defrost The Cats use to bite bits off them,his curry was so i was told the best??? I had a pair of new overalls which i threw into the bin after a few hours in his place. I was informed by the council /inspector his was one of the cleanest in Cardiff I never will go again for a curry, he had some real horror stories to tell . That was a mild one hope it dont put you off...
