Baroness Mone loses Tory whip amid PPE contracts row

The Prime Minister said he was “shocked” by allegations about her links to a company that won more than £200 million of government contracts.

How did his colleague Baroness Mone end up with nearly £30 million of taxpayers’ money in her bank account?,” asked Sir Keir.

Mone obtained a marketing job with the Labatt brewing company and, within two years, had risen to become its head of marketing in Scotland.[3] She has since said that she invented qualifications to help get the job there.

Mone has claimed that an Ultimo bra was worn by Julia Roberts in the Hollywood movie, Erin Brockovich, but this was denied by the film's creators.

In 2014, a former operations director for MJM won a claim for unfair dismissal from her company after discovering that Mone had authorised electronic bugging of his office.

Mone threatened to sue her critics when it was revealed her company MJM International had paid a substantial sum of money into a controversial tax avoidance scheme, criticised by Chancellor George Osborne as "morally repugnant".

Mone claimed that exercise and reduced caloric intake had no effect on her weight and credited TrimSecrets pills with her weight loss.[13] Mone also falsely claimed the efficacy of the product had been proven in clinical trials, but when questioned further, she explained that approximately 60 users had completed a questionnaire but was unable to produce the results.

On 27 August 2015, the prime minister, David Cameron, announced a list of new creations of life peers, including Mone.[34] Her inclusion drew criticism from other business leaders.

In her maiden speech in the House of Lords, Mone stated: "I look forward to playing a full and active role in your lordships’ house". The Times reported in 2018 that in the previous year, Mone had only attended the House of Lords on 12 % of the days in which it was sitting, missing important debates including on the Brexit bill.[41][26] Her low attendance led SNP MSP Rona Mackay to describe her as the "Layabout Lady of Mayfair" and businessman Douglas Anderson, who had criticised her original appointment, called for her to resign.[41] By early 2022, Mone had made only five speeches in the House of Lords and asked 22 written questions.[42] As of December 2022, she had not spoken in a debate since March 2020 and had last voted in April 2022.[43]

How did this woman get life peerage? I wonder what she was doing with that WHIP?

Time the House of Lords was abolished and replaced by an elected assembly.

Yes you could do that, get rid of them but it will be very hard.

A bill to abolish the house Of Lords would need to pass the house of Lords, cannot see any other way to do it in a democracy such as in the Westminster system.

So you replace it with an elected body, who will do as they please.
As is the case in many western style democracies.

Yes an elected body may do as it pleases , but they can always be replaced by an elected body that can do as it pleases.
The Commons can overrule the Lords

The Commons can legally override the Lords just by waiting until the next session of Parliament and re-passing bills the Lords have rejected. And in practice, they can override the Lords just by taking out Lords amendments and re-passing bills within days. In effect, the Lords are entirely advisory.

The mess that the commons is currently in the Next Labour Government will have such a large majority they will steam roll through bills that will suit their agenda. No elected government should ever have that size of a majority but these clowns need to go.
