Clear them out
News from UK today via a correspondent about Sir Steer Clear.
If he wins the next erection in UK, he will remove the House of Lords and replace it with a form of Senate.
Blair attempted similar but could only change part of the system.
There has over the years been talk of removing the house but so far to no avail.
Unlike many countries such as Oz, USA, NZ, Canada the UK does not have a written constitution, it is one based on common law and Parliamentary Statutes.
This makes it a much harder task to undertake.
The Westminster system is based on a two-house system, a house of representatives and an upper house.
In most countries the upper house has members voted for by the electorate, in UK they are appointed by a variety on means, most of which the public do not understand or know.
They are as in most countries just a house of review of bills presented to them from the house of reps.
The proposal is that any new house would have no influence of effect on monetary policy, only general laws.
But to remove them from the house of Lords would mean the Lords would have to pass a bill to dismiss the selves!!!!
Not an easy task by any means.
Of course the current gov could if kit wishes pass a law to safe guard the current situation.
There is always going to be risks in changing a system so old as this one, what are the real motives of what many consider to be a left wing style socialist party.
Over time there have been many odd laws in UK, many which still stand on the books but few know of.
One concerns the transportation of a coffin complete with body in it.
If such a coffin is taken by foot across private land by undertaker and his entourage the path taken then becomes a public right of way.
There no doubt will be a change of gov in two years time, be interesting to see how it all pans out!!

Happy daze John in Oz.
Life is too short to blend in.

Re: Clear them out
#1 They don’t need a written constitution John , they are all hand picked and have the title of honourable so will have to do the right thing ???
With a name like Sir Steer Clear he should be painted black and yellow to distinguish him as an isolated danger. To be passed on either side of course. No good having Cappy on the wheel as he would most likely hit it . Did they ever finally get rid of the piracy law and was still on the death penalty list up until quite latterly ? One they overlooked at the time.Cheers

Re: Clear them out
It's not the House of Lords itself as a system is wrong, it is how some of its members are appointed, some by being a Party's benefactor and others on the whim of an outgoing Prime Minister, who may or may not have thought 'I'll through the cat among the pigeons' and appoint someone he/she knows will be controversial as in a latest appointee in their twenties, what life experience can they bring to the forum, another being a PM's hairdresser, one wonders what was the motive behind these appointments. Yes, we need another House of Sorts to hold the House of Commons to account on occasions, but what that House comprises of and how they are appointed I have no idea.

Re: Clear them out
# John maybe try sorting Australian politics out first and let those who live in the UK worry about the shambles the UK has become.

Re: Clear them out
Alas we live in a world where we do have to worry about what happens in other countries. If we are originally from a particular country and that country spawned us and influenced our formative years, we are interested in the path it has, and is following, we somehow cannot completely divorce ourselves from it, no matter how loyal we are to our adopted country: it is human nature. It is also known as Free Speech, which a lot of nations do not have and for which a lot of people sacrificed their lives. Just an observation.

I think the post you are referring to Ivan sounds to me to be a bit dubious , the poster himself is the first one to question other countries politics , a bit like calling the kettle black. If he is of British descent I have rarely heard a citizen of their own country be so defamatory against his own people . Not British old boy. Cheers JS

Re: Clear them out
Reforming or abolishing the Lords raises its head from time to time but never gets past the idea stage. There are so many vested powerful interests who want it to remain as it is. The Lords is used as a way of rewarding cronies and political donors or getting rid of MP's and ministers to make way for those climbing the greasy pole. The fact that it is undemocratic to have an unelected chamber is never considered. At the present time there are more Peers than the House has room for all collecting £350 expenses per day just for signing in.
If Starmer is serious about abolishing the Lords he will need an overwhelming majority at the next election or it will be voted against in Parliament.

Having the same initials as the son of God, probably influences his preaching.
