    Default Russian Trawlers (1971)

This poem was published by Ronald Hope as a prizewinning poem in the annual ‘College of the Sea’ magazine in 1972.

    Russian Trawlers (1971).

One fine day in the South Atlantic
    We sighted them,
    Bows sharply raked,
    Proceeding south,
    Following each other
    At the same speed,
    At exact distances apart.

A pack of lean grey wolves,
    Hungry,
    Far from home,
    Searching that calm sunlit sea
    With a precision
    As merciless and cold
    As the Siberian winter.
