    VOLUNTEERS

Where do they find such men as these,
Who leave their homes to cross the seas.
Who bend their backs to ship's demand,
    Toiling daily far from land.

Some came to sail from Inverness,
To man the ships in time of stress.
From Cardiff and from County Cork,
A few arrived from old New York.

They all sailed in freedom's cause,
From Canada and some from Oz.
To crew the freighters tankers too,
In the maelstrom known as World War II.

They manned the guns, stood by the helm,
    Seamen of a worldwide realm.
Amid the strife of convoys run,
    From Halifax and Wellington.

The call went out in time of need,
    Supplies delivered, mouths to feed.
They came from city and rural town,
The seamen never let us down.
