    Default Confrontation

    CONFRONTATION

The LYNROWEN sailed from the River Plate,
In the South Atlantic, met her fate.
She was on her course and homeward bound,
When a German raider laid her down.

It was the German cruiser KARLSRHUE,
That sank the ship and took the crew.
They took a load of sugar,
The Captain's wife and her friend too.

They put them aboard the CREFELD,
The ship bulging at her seams.
    Four hundred nineteen prisoners,
Thought of freedom in their dreams.

They were set free at Tanerife,
For home and England they were bound.
The Captain and his loving wife,
Returned home all safe and sound.

    Ian Adrian Millar

Written with my Great Aunt and Uncle in mind. Great Uncle Arthur Jones was Master of the S/S LYNROWEN when his ship was intercepted and sunk by the German cruiser KARLSRHUE.
This was also the first time he took his wife Winifred with him on a voyage. This was in 1914 near the start of the 14-18 War.

Thank you for the details of LYNROWEN. As an aside I have the following article which appeared in an October 1914 edition of The Cambrian News and Merionethshire Standard. SUNK BY GRMAN CRUISER. Lloyd's agent at Teneriffe cabled on Friday that the German steamer CREFELD had arrived having on board 419 of the crews and passengers of thirteen British steamers sunk by the German cruiser KARLSRHUE. One of the steamers was the LYNROWEN of Liverpool in charge of Capt. Arthur Jones, Llanfihangel who was accompanied by his wife on her first voyage. The LYNROWEN was a Liverpool steamer and left Buenos Ayres for that port on September 24th, being due in Liverpool on Wednesday of last week. Captain Jones who is well known in the town, has two brothers in Aberystwyth, namely Mr. Stephen Jones, Stanley terrace and Capt. J Arthur Jones, Exeter House, Queen's road, the latter now on a voyage from Rouen to Cardiff. A telegram has been received from Capt. and Mrs. Jones saying they are "all well" in charge of the British Counsel.

The closest I can find to a photo of what ss LYNROWAN would have looked like is a near-sister built 10 months later with approx.same tonnage and dimensions, built in the same shipyard-Robert Craggs & Sons Ltd;Dent's Wharf,Middlesbrough. She was the ss BRIKA
English & American Shipping Co. Ltd. (C. T. Bowring & Co.), London

13/03/1917 torpedoed by UC.47 when 13 miles SE of Coningbeg LV on passage Santiago de Cuba for London with sugar.
