    GREAT UNCLE HUGH

Great Uncle Hugh was a sailing man,
    A Welshman through and through.
It was under sail, then under steam,
Aboard the ships he so well knew.

His first ship was a schooner,
    The ACORN was her name.
He sailed as boy aboard her,
Hauling roof slate was her game.

He signed aboard the old GLANWERN,
The first steamship in his score.
He shipped as cook to feed the crew,
As they steamed to foreign shore.

In ships of wood and ships of steel,
    Hugh ventured cross he world.
From way up north, to way down south,
    Neath the merchant flag unfurled.

He sailed aboard the OBAN BAY,
Bringing home tales of the sea.
    With canvas snapping overhead,
They were gently passed to me.

Hugh served in peace and time of war,
Aboard a ship, the old LOWMOOR.
He rose in rank to second mate,
    A Welshman to the core.

A final entry that we found,
Found him aboard the NEWTONMOOR. The years had passed his sailing done,
Great Uncle Hugh came back ashore.

Remembering my Great Uncle Hugh Stephen Jones, one of several brothers of Aberystwyth who worked their lives at sea in the Merchant Navy.
