Shipmate
SHIPMATE
I have a friend from long ago,
Who sailed with me through ice and snow.
Our friendship stood the test of time,
Through weather foul, through weather fine.
We sailed one time from Holy Head,
A happy trip no more be said.
We spent some time, we looked around,
To find a pub in Dublin town.
Another time he sailed with me,
Across the old Sargasso Sea.
Beneath the sun for many a day,
Through where the flying fishes play.
Shipmates we both had crossed the line,
On our way to the Argentine.
We stopped at Rio on the way,
At Corcavado we paused to pray.
Some times we wished we'd not been born,
As when we rounded old Cape Horn.
We persevered and got on by,
We knew not how, we knew not why.
So when I think of all those years,
The ports of call and tasty beers.
I remember one who sailed the sea,
Through thick and thin a friend to me.
