    THE REAL PRICE OF FOOD

Hang the bunting on the rail,
On the morrow we will sail.
For England home and family too,
Across the seas of world war two.

Amid a world that's gone insane,
We ply our trade in convoy lane.
We crew the ship that brings you food,
Some sail in tankers hauling crude.

We sailed from Sydney and Halifax,
Some of our crew aren't coming back.
But no matter what the price may be,
We crew the ships for Victory.

We stand our watch in fair and storm,
For merchant seamen that's the norm.
We did our jobs out on the sea,
We did our bit to keep you free.

So when you sit down for a meal,
Think of that seaman at the wheel.
Who may have lost his life today,
To bring you food without delay.

    The price of Fish

The price of fish is very dear
200 men were lost last year

200 men in a watery grave
That was the price, the price they gave

up in the land of the mignight sun
where the endless fight is never done

Tired and weary, drenched and cold
They strive to fill the iced up hold

Many a man, gone over the rail
Lost in the teeth of the arctic gale

I only hope my point is clear
the price for fish is very dear.

    -unknown poet.

This poem is written on a memorial plaque near an upturned boat in the Dillingham Boat Harbor.
