    PALMER STATION

We took a pounding in the Davis Straits
    Punta Arenas falls astern.
We're bound for Palmer in the icy south,
All hands have much to learn.

Our boats are cradled, well lashed down,
As we're battered by the sea.
    Our captain was Bill Benkert,
    No finer man could be.

It was not long, the ice appeared,
    A danger to us all.
Our ship was built to break the ice,
    While aloft the skuas call.

We're in the pack, through ice we grind,
To bring supplies to Palmer's crew.
On the ice three emperors march along,
    In tuxedoed retinue.

It's light all day, and light all night,
In this land so far from home.
Our fame and fortune quite well known,
    Wherever we may roam.

Through icy seas, and howling gales,
    Beneath Antarctic sun.
We'll head for Boston far away,
Now that our tasks are done.

Hopefully thoughts will continue to sprout from the misty past and with the hope that my words will cause some to think of those who gave their all to see a job well done.
My best wishes to all for the New Year.
