The Ill Fated Brig - The 'Amazon'
This is the yarn of a sailing ship
Whose captain died on her maiden-trip,
And whose next to command fared hardly the better,
Becoming bankrupt himself and sued as a debtor,
While the third had his share of misfortunes and knocks
In chancing to run her aground on the rocks,
So the owner declared the ship was for sale
(Expecting, it seems, no end to the tale)
But the painter he hired, a native of France,
Perhaps through a quirk of pride or romance,
Disliked Mary Sellars, the owner’s request,
And called her instead the Mary Celeste.
