Re: Wasn't this us?
I have to Thank Adolf Hitler, [yer what?? you say. yes] he bombed our slum, with a midden for a toilet, one cold water tap, and three of us in a bed fighting to sleep in the shallow end in the 1930s. and eventually we got a three bedroom Council house. with a toilet and a bathroom. and hot water from a back boiler. fantastic.
Dad, never ever drove a car or ever owned one,. would never believe his grandson, my son, now lives in a £2,000,000 home down south. Beyond his wildest dreams.
How times change.

Re: Wasn't this us?
We all look back at what we consider to be the good old days, and no doubt the younger generation of today will do similar in time. But what of the future where if technology continues at the curent pace thye may well not be able to look back.
We recall it all because we had to use our full brain capacity, where as the young of today rely on a smart phone, tablet or similar. They have no need to store in their brain much of the things we did, now technology does it for them.
So in time will they think back to when the smart phone was all the go, but not be sure of why?
I often fear that it will be the total reliance on technology that will be the downfall of man.
What will happen if the computers fail and the only ones who know how to fix them are missing?
Man may be smart but in time will out smart himself.

Re: Wasn't this us?
A word of Advice.
To anyone reading this whose parents and grandparents are still hale and hearty, if there's one thing I have learnt over the years it is generally later in life that an interest in one's genealogy develops.
Unfortunately by then parents and grandparents may no longer be around to answer all the questions you could have asked, but didn't!!. So if you are lucky enough to still have them around, go and speak to them.
.........and do it now, right now!!. You won't regret it.
Or of course, if you are a grandparent, then write down as much as you can remember of family history and give a copy to your family. Most probably like myself, many of you have already done this.
Just thought I'd make a point of mentioning this.
FOURO.

Re: Wasn't this us?
I have made a Bio of the family history, with photos, of Dad`s side and Mother`s side. including photos that were taken in the 1870s of my great great grandparents, 146 years ago.
The family names , mothers maiden name and Dad`s which is also mine, both go back over 1,500 years. from the days of the Vikings in Ormskirk, which was a Viking village in Lancashire in those days.
I have traced the family line back to 1688 so far. With photos of Grave stones and from Church records.
I have also written what life was like for a lad in the 1930s and during World War 2 with the Blitz and being bombed and Mother being blown up. and then my life at sea. that part is not finished yet just what I have written in Seafaring Stories in the Swinging the Lead Forum, so there is more to do yet.
Cheers
