    the galley boy

the galley boy rose at the crack of the dawn
shuffled into the galley and felt the range warm
down to the bunker to top up the coal

inthe north land lies a river
    onthe river was my home
the sounds of ships are in my heart
but i found i must roam
the call is strong for me to go
and once more i must see
the river tyne and canny shields
that once was home to me
