Default The Boys from the Vindi.

    THE BOYS FROM THE VINDI.

So where are they now, these boys from the Vindi,
Who fled through the gate as it clanged close behind?
Taking minds full of boat drills and autographed pictures,
Young faces still smiling, leaving childhood behind.

Some didn’t sail too far, just the end of the Channel
When a bearing was taken on a point near St Ives,
Death waits near the Mersey, and the Thames or the Clydeside,
Where Wolf packs lay, programmed, to waste these young lives,

There is nothing but praise we can heap on these seaman
For ours is the debt which cost them their lives.
Not knowing the part that they played in our future.
Not knowing the comfort of children and wives.

Each year as we gather, we boys from the Vindi,
To remember the fallen and to celebrate life,
Now we’re faded old seaman dressed fine in our blazers
With gold speckled badges, sewn on by the wife.

Each year we grow wiser, each year we grow fewer,
For we are a band of diminishing men..
Who formed part of history, a time that just dwindled
To memories and stories and dreams of back then

We strode the world’s stage as a band of young rovers,
We sailed the world’s oceans with a vigorous ease
For we were the future in a legend still forming
Till progress brought shipping and trade to its knees.

So now we commemorate Sharpness and seamen
This tradition is ours and this old ship that died
In a moment of youth we were steeped in her wisdom
For this long haul of age as we ebb like the tide.

So a word before leaving the gates of the Vindi
For we carried her myth as we forged o’er the seas
Where the gods smiled down as we crested the oceans
Where they gave us safe voyage and returned us with ease.

So mark this occasion, you boys from the Vindi,
Just stand for a moment apart from the crowd
To remember their faces, those with us no longer
We all flew the Red Duster and did it unbowed..

I was a Vindi Boy in 1949. Still alive and still drinking more alcohol than is good for me. That's what I'm told anyway.A few of us were discussing this at my local watering hole a while back.We got around to these units(whatever they are) that you're not supposed to exceed a certain number of. We came to the conclusion we all should have died fifteen years ago.

    Hi Colin.
I was at the Vindi in 1949, what a wonderful year that was, Living in Cooma i can no longer get too the Vindi reunions in Sydney, I wrote this when we used to meet at the Masonic pub in Sydney.
    The Vindi Boys.
    -----
    We gather as a group
Like we used to on the poop
And the bullshit falls like dust apon the Plain
Of those trips we all had done
To those countries in the sun
And the needles from the steward that caused pain
    -----
    While the ladies natter on
    We break into a song
About the sea school we all went to long ago
    The Vindi brought us all
    to this nice Masonic hall
In our sea days we'd be shown the bloody door.
    --------
    What stories we did tell
About ships that came from hell
But some good ones, even tankers, we submit
    That's what reunions for
So we all can have a jaw
Tinged with a little bullshit we admit.
    ---------
    There's nothing we can add
To the life we all have had
If your a Taff, Jock, or changed your name to Cindy
So raise your glass on high
Wipe that tear from your eye
One thing we have in common is the Vindi
    Cheers Des

In one of my pathetic Poems the first chapter starts,..........
    .
I went to the Vindi when I was a lad
where conditions were hard and the food was bad.
But I walked through those gates as tall as a man
off to my first ship, bound for Japan......
    .................................
Great start to a seafaring career
    Cheers
    Brian

Having spent the compulsory 6 weeks for Catering at the Vindi I have come to thois conclusion. If you were not a drinker beforte going there you sure would be after you came out. From observations many Vindi boys becams over time professional drinkers.
Yes we should have dided many years ago according to the experts, but what would thye know? Most you will find do not drink, they make sweeping recomendations such as only drink on four days of the week. That creates a problem as they ndo bot state which days, so to be on the safe side we drink each day. They also say standard drinks, well Beer, Gin, Scotch are standard and come in big bottles.
