George (Darkie Brown)
My father a kru man was in the engine room on the Palm line ships.
I know he worked as head man ,fireman ,trimmer and Donkey man.
I have his discharged books which show He sailed on the Ilorin in 1960 the Matadi Dec 1960 to May 1961,Makurdi March to July 1964. Katsina Oct 1964 to July 1965 .I would welcome any memories of the Kru Boys in general and my father in particular.
Thanking you in anticipation.

Its good to read these threads ,they bring back fond memories. I joined the "MATADI PALM" as a deck boy in 1953 and what a fantastic trip that was , we went down to Matadi which was then in the Belgian congo. I remember going up rivers and seeing all sorts of wildlife among the trees that we seemed to sail quite close to, I did a second trip and had risen to the dizzy heights of JOS on the second trip. Great times

Matadi Palm - she was the last ship that I sailed on - I left the ship in Bromborough(Wirral) dock after a hectic trip with more engine breakdowns than you could shake a stick at!! We brought a cargo of palm oil from the West coast for van den bergs margerine company which we pumped ashore to the factory about 1.5 miles away.
Best Regards
Chris Roberts
