    Default Mv salamanca

Sailed on Salamanca in i think was 1967 - 1968, from Liverpool to Cristobal Panama where we were for the Xmas and New Year most of our time spent in the Zamba bar, doing what most young and healthy seafarers do, a great time was had by all who attended.
We then sailed on to i think approximately 27 ports in South America. The highlight for me personally apart from the normal cavorting and carrying on, was our transit of the Magellan straight where fortunate for me i was on watch steering and lookouts about. A most magnificent experience if you enjoy the beauty of this wonderful planet.
I think the Captains name was Williamson a large man who wore gold rimmed spectacles a good man and true. My memory for names is somewhat defunct now, how i wish i could remember the lads on that ship, a really cracking set of mariners from the Captain down to the galley boy, who incidentally was shot in the rectum by the police in a bar in i think was Valparaiso, after what can only be described as a helluva bar room brawl between our lads and some other seafarers in port.
A mixed crew of Scousers, Irish, Stornaway,Geordie and i was the only Yorkie. If at all anyone reads this and was one of the crew it would be really good to hear from you.

Roy, I walked those very same decks in 1954, again I was the only Yorkie (Honorary as born in London, but the Luftwaffe didn't like our house, nor two more after it, so ended up in Yorkshire and acquired the accent), the WCSA was a young mans dream, (as was Havana pre Castro) after the dull colours of wartime clothing, if you had enough clothing coupons to buy something, the colours of the houses, buildings, clothing and honey coloured maidens certainly lifted and pulled at the heart strings, better stop now before I start crying

I sailed down the coast this year and severalntimes in recent years, also in the 50s where every port had British ships of PSNC,
Now not one British ship to be seen.
Just germans, with thousands of containers, HAMBURG SUD, HAPAG LLOYDM,

    what happened ?????????????

When we finally shed the yoke of EU, and if , as expected we start to trade more world wide on our own, maybe, just maybe, we will require ships to deal with the trade, would that not be nice ?, ships, all though probably container ships, but with the British Merchant navy flag flying from the stern !!!, i live in hope, kt

    Hi Kieth
If your dream comes true, I wonder if my wife would let me go back.

Those cops and their guns in South America. Nearly came a cropper myself in Sao Sebastiao, Brazil. On my own in the wrong place at the wrong time. If I hadn't kept my head I was toast

If it happens no doubt most of the ships would be built in South Korea, looks like the biggest one at present.

Exactly, the only time we see a red duster is
on pleasure craft with some 'wally' at the wheel
    with his captain's cap on.

Did a run job on the Salamanca from K.G.5 to Hull 26th September 67 to 29th September 67. Bit of a Rust Bucket, didn't fancy it deep sea so Joined the Kenuta . I checked my Discharge Book and the Captains name was Whittaker.

With the oil price falling rapidly, the Greeks have ordered four 320,000 dwt tankers to be kept at sea full of crude for six months until the price improves, how is that for a job.
