This post is about P&O Ferries not benefits or unions.
It is disappointing on a Merchant Navy site to see so little support for fellow seafarers. Some of the replies appear to seek excuses for the actions of a exploitable shipping company.

Eldest daughter has a work friend who's son was 3rd mate on one of P&O Dover/Calais ferries and was amongst those thrown out without any notice.
He has now been begged to return as many of the agency officers employed to replace them have turned out to favour alcohol too much. Also on a recent inspection by the MCA where a fire drill was being held the agency crew managed to turn off the water supply to the sprinkler system rather than activating it, so it would appear that these agency staff are not the sharpest tool in the box.

It has often been asked why did the union not do more?

Could it be that maybe it suits the union to do what they do, is there more in it for the workers or is it for the officials?
I knew one union official who had never done a days work in his life, bit like some politicians we all know.

But in my opinion the unions will only do what they consider to be to their advantage.
So with P&O maybe there is nothing in it for them as it appears the company has gone to, overseas owners.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Well they should keep the ships in their own waters. That was the principle of the Australian Maritime unions the 11 years I worked out here . Work here then the manning of such is Australian citizens . This was Government ruling. Doesn’t take a scholar to work out. The answer is there if the government had the wit to use what wit they had , rather than just waffle. JS
