That was my experience exactly, I remember sailing from Lpool on a strath boat as for the reason you mention we flew the Blue Ensign. I automatically thought the skipper was ex R.N. not the case on our return to pay off in Avon mouth the bosun told me to go to the bridge and obtain the ensign but be sure to get the skippers decision. The skipper was on the bridge and pointed to the pigeon hole containing the red ensign his decision entirely. Just to chuck another flag conundrum in to the subject, the white ensign can be flown on a private vessel, yacht, motor boat etc, if the owner is a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron Cowes. The annoying thing is he will use his membership of that to gain access to your club facilities as a visitor, but you have as much chance of using your membership to get into the RYS as plaiting sawdust. June 1997 Queens silver jubilee. Only flag I could find to fly in the pub we owned was a White Ensign that was 'borrowed' from Chatham ship yard. No one compalined.
