    Smile Trident Tankers

Anyone remeber them? I was with Trident from '66 - '69 - some nice ships, and PANDO lifestyle, unusual on a tanker.
MEGNA ( EX 'FOYLE'), 'OPAWA', 'GARONNE', 'ERNE'

I joined Trident in January 1966, the "Maloja" then "Eridge" "Kent" "Busiris" "Quedia" "Malwa" and last of all "Garonne". leaving in 1972 when I passed my Masters. They were in the main good days and I enjoyed it all. There is a book on the company by a ex member "Trident Tankers a change of course"

I sailed with Trident from mid 68 to end of 70, and had some really good trips.
Grafton, Ardtaraig and the Erne come to mind, especially the latter when we sailed out to the South Pacific Islands.
Capt English comes to mind, also Ben Woolley who I later worked with in Libya for a number of years, in fact we are still in contact.
    Good days.

    Hi Dave,

Don't know if we sailed together, my memory for names was, and is appaling. Sailed on Megna Feb to June 69 and Erne Sept 69 to Feb 70.

    Hi Colin,

I joined the Erne in San Francisco just as she finished the South Pacific Islands trips. The C/E was Jimmy Read and I think the Captain was Scudamore (wrong spelling I think?).

    Default Trident

Just found this site and delighted!!!!. Started with P & O and switched to Trident in Dec 68. Started on Grafton then 2 great trips on the Garonne through to end of 1970 - super ship, great crew, good trips and loved every minute. Sailed with Captains English, Bolton and Bishop. Was great mates with a 4th Deck Officer called Roger Barber (from Doncaster) and would be great to track him and others down. Being a Sparks was best position with Trident, shut down radio office on arrival and as long as equipment was working my main responsibility was to escort any wives that wanted to go ashore (and get paid for it!)

    Default In at the beginning

    Hi

I joined Trident Tankers from P&O in 1963 as the first ships were being transferred from their original operating companies within the P&O Group.

I had been 4/O and 3/O in cargo and the passenger ships Strathmore and Canton but then found that with the withdrawal of the pre-war built liners all promotion stalled. I sailed as 3/O in Garonne as a P&O-Orient ship and deciided that if the new construction was going to be predominantly tankers I might as well follow that route.

First ship was Malwa which I joined as a P&O ship in Falmouth and sailed as Trident after a little paintwork on the funnel. Captain Harry Long RNR remained in command after the change over so we set the standard for Trident flying the Blue Ensign, most of the officers were from P&O with 2 from BISN and 1 from Nourse.

Promotion to 2/O followed and I joined the NZS/Federal tanker Lincoln in January 1964 in Antwerp. A much bigger paint job here and a total change of crew. As NZS she had British ratings but Trident, like P&O and BISN had Indian crew. The Officers were from the same 3 companies as in Malwa.

I left to obtain my Master's but then my Father was struck down by a heart attack and I was granted up to a year's unpaid leave. In the end I never returned to sea but joined IBM in the early days of commercial computing. I did work for P&O again but as a Computer Systems Analyst in the Head Office developing a Passenger Booking system.

They were good days, but computing (and meeting my wife at IBM) proved better.

    Default Grayswift service

I don't know if you will ever look back at this, but you are correct, I was the first 'Grayswift' skipper in early '71. Did it for a year before moving on to Jebel Dhanna, where I was a pilot/mooring master for a few years.
