Re: vindi sea pie recipe
Just a small piece from the Vindi site but not the Recipe! LOL
Two lads came to our table ,they looked like something out of Dickens; “It’s sea pie for tea new boys , you can ‘ave a second portion for a fag “ It was the Artful Dodger and Smike.
We were loaded ,we had our packets of Woodbines and Players Weights ,we gave them some cigarettes anyway,we did’nt want their dinners for them. We had a lot to learn………
Dinner was served ,Sea Pie ,none of us had ever seen anything like it ,we could’nt begin to guess what was in it , it was pushed around the plates ,lifted up on forks and inspected, poked and prodded ,but I think that I was the only one to empty my plate . There a bit of a commotion as one the deck lads who had been working near the galley ,rushed in and gobbled up as much of the uneaten food as he could manage. Hmmmmm, we were beginning our education.

Re: vindi sea pie recipe
A stew of salt meat, potatoes, broken ship's biscuits, onions and available spices was known as "lobscouse". Meat and vegetables layered between crusts of biscuit flour was known as sea pie. The number of layers giving it the name double-decker or triple-decker. "Crackerjack" was a mixture of preserved meat mixed with ship's biscuits and soup if it was available. Fresh vegetables were usually only available for a short time after leaving a port.
Cooking At Sea: some marine gastronomy
If you add some leftover Meat and the above it isn't too far from the old Bubble and Squeak ??

Re: vindi sea pie recipe
If memory serves the Vindi 'Sea Pie' was most likely made with sea water and sea weed. The potato top was more than likely shredded paper and the cheese came from a mouse trap.

Re: vindi sea pie recipe
Doc. I read that artical on the first tripper, however I was even more interested from page 41 on as when he joined the Ruahine, it was as though I had written it, because a year after 1955 i too joined that ship as a bellboy and followed the same course of brass cleaning, swobbing out etc and working in the childrens resturant. I too was sick as a dog throughout the channel and Bay of Biscay, it was a good job the kids were also very sick.
we also followed the same route out and in. we also tried the delights of Belboa, rum was only 10cents a glass and that included the coke!!! the girls a little more expensive, most of them were Cuban and very pretty.
one thing he didn`t mention was that if you were in the shower and someone turned on the cold water tap in the sink, then the person in the shower got a blast of red hot water, most times this caused loud screams and a few naughty words directed at the person at the sink.
she was a good ship though and a happy one although there were a few ruffians on there.
my friend and i did 2 trips on her before we were told that we would not be coming back next trip.
