When in my teens ship was in Liverpool with a full crew on board,the stores manager was on board and a crew deputation asked him if he could get the milkman to deliver milk every morning at the bottom of the gangway. Sure he said will do that. Later on that day he was sighted going round the mess rooms collecting in the. Tins of condensed milk even the open ones. When asked what he was doing his reply was you can’t have both . This caused a bit of a ruckus and a lot of self made bile , such was a lot of the problems at sea in the British Merchant Navy ,you had idiots and trouble makers all shapes and size all ranks and out and out to cause bad feeling , as regards the episode with the condensed milk it was the time of my eyes starting to open to some of the frugalities practised by some shipowners.
