Re: THe utterings of a
Hi John
They say the earth is warming up? Sure is, The Trump is now thinking of calling the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, and he has been eyeing up the Canadian Pacific. I will probably have to change all my old school atlases that I have in my drawer, navigators wil b scratching their heads.

Well if you think back when De-Gaulle , the self promoting one from bird colonel to General, think it was him who wanted to do away with GMT and the English Channel.? He must have been applauding when GMT was changed to Universal Time, to me I still call it GMT. JS

James, I am fully aware of what Trump is up to.
It has nothing to do with buying Greenland or even taking it over.
It has more to do with global security.
Greenland is located between USA, Russia and Baltic region.
It could easily be taken over by Russia or China, China has a small interest there already.
The intention is to bring notice to the world of the dangers of another country such as Russia moving in.
Greenland is a major source of essential materials.
It is a member of NATO but the population is so small, 56,500, it could be over run before any help could arrive.
With global tension the way it currently is there is a need for a body of strength such as USA to take a stand on such matters.

Happy daze John in Oz.

The usual slip of the tongue and their views on what others say to make a story up John, ? the usual ploy of the vigilant media moguls ? And which side of the great divide their owners stand. The man is not even president yet , and already they have started, and the way they will run with the hounds in a matter of a couple of weeks time. Take it all with a pinch of salt. JS

John get your school boy Atlas out Greenland is a long way from the USA, there is a wee country called Canada you have to take into account, Iceland and then Norway/Spitsbergen , so a long way from Russia. Good job you were in catering and not the ships navigator.

#15 Yes no doubt it is hot air concerning the use of the military to take over Greenland. I am sure Denmark & the EU will give the USA what they want as they are crapping themselves if the Donald does as he says and tells Europe cough up more for defence or look after yourselves.
The worry is what way he will bounce concerning the Ukraine/Russia.
At the end of the day as most of us are in the autumn of time on earth it is our children and grand children who will havr to deal with a world getting closer and closer to a major conflict.
It is all about money and greed.

John
America will need all the money they can gather together after this firestorm finishes, they will need it to rebuild Los Angeles and the rest of the country that the tornadoes destroyed.
We watch the helicopter's take off every morning here in Cooma; searching for any signs of smoke, so far nothing, we are glad of that, shouldn't be any as last night it was down to 2 degrees, we have had the aircon on 22 for the last two weeks.

Re: THe utterings of a
James I do not need your simplistic remarks regarding my global knowledge.
I know that region very well.
Distance and placement mean nothing by todays standard.
Greenland may soon be once again independent if the Danes agree.
It will then be an open target for any country that may wish to take it over.
This is the point being made by Trump, Greenland once independent will need support.

Re: THe utterings of a
We all saw similar in Cuba in the early 60s and JFK jumped in with both feet to stop. Putin with his thinking probably sees the same similar circumstances happening to Russia with the Ukraine. Diplomacy goes by the way, when force is used.JS
The same applied to the Falklands and could easily recur. However the future was placed in the hands of the residents and they chose to stay as they are. JS
The same with Northern Ireland and the list goes on, history never stops.JS.
