after years and years of speculation the big u " sailed " from her long suffering pier - on the first leg to her water grave - its estimated she will arrive in mid march and a " clean up " to rid her of any hazardous material - which could take 12 months or more - before she is finally sunk

From some angels the funnels look very large and overpowering, not looking as if they belong!!

In the old days the larger the funnels the greater the apparent prestige for publicity, practicality had nothing to do with it, on some vessels a third or fourth funnel wasn't even connected to the engineroom, If I remember rightly the 2nd funnel on the 'Reina del Pacifico' even had cabins in it

On one war time built liberty ship I was on the funnel served two, purposes and one of them,it was the flag locker inside. Any one of the lady passengers of middling years who wanted showing round the ship, it was the first and sometimes the only place I showed them, it was all carpeted out inside as well at funnel deck level. The climb up to the funnel deck was enough climbing of vertical ladders for most of them. JS
