River Mersey

There are plans to build a tidal power plant on the Mersey. Attatched is an artists impression as to what it will look like.
But at a cost of £6 billion and no doubt that wil probably double I will be amazed if it ever happens.
If it did no doubt the power it generates would be a welcome bonus to the area.
Looking at that photo there will be some rush of water going through those Turbines. Anyone who knows the Mersey there is one hell off a current when the tide is coming in and out.

Let's hope that it happens and gets going PDQ. So much messing about has gone on with renewable energy and we seem to be completely tied in to Wind Farms; sometimes operational and sometimes not......
The tide is reliable and this could be rolled out to all the major rivers. We need someone with a proper vision for the future. We live in hope.

True Brenda, the Mersey was always an ideal place for tidal power. Especially now that a lot of the older up river docks are redunant. One problem I can see would be what to do with Garston docks?

They've talked of tidal power in the Bristol Channel for years. With the 2nd highest tidal range in the world( Bay of Fundy in Canada highest). the power generated would be huge plus most importantly predictable unlike wind turbines.

Like a number of other countries UK talks the talk but does not always walk the walk.

A number of countries in the Baltic region and others have come to understand that renewables of any kind are just not reliable enough, there must be a firm back up such as Nuclear or gas.
Coal can still be used as there is now a way to work with it and remove all emissions.

John you must have shares in coal mining Cleaning emissions from coal fired power stations has been around for years just to expensive to implement.
Scrubbers for instances and carbon capture, removing Sulphur which was the cause of acid rain.
How many Nuclear power stations are there in Australia.
Yes as you say the UK talk the talk but cancel the walk. Currently there is only one new Nuclear power station under construction at Hinkley Point.
Three others were either under construction or at the planning stage but the contractors have pulled out for various reasons, suspect the lack of government funding.
I think there are only 3 (100%)Oil Fired power stations left. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. There are several oil fired
/ LNG fired mix stations. The oil side is backup.
There is a big push to fit these Heat Pump central heating systems . Only any good if you live in a brand new house that is fully insulated. Also even with a government grant it expensive. I have just replaced my old gas central heating boiler with a new one , certainly has reduced my bills. The old one was 30+ years old worked okay. Replaced all the radiators as they were in some rooms single panel and due to the age of them probably full of god knows what. Certainly been a long time since the system had a flush through.

A carbon free coal fired power station has been developed here in Oz but the gov will not allow it to be built.
We currently have no Nuclear due to the stubbornness of our Labor gov, but it will come in time.
The possibility of running only on renewables is possible, but the number and size of batteries required makes it almost impossible.
Zero emissions is impossible, unless you stop all manufacturing then where will the batteries come from.
We are all being lead by the nose by those who are set to make a fortune out of this.
As to some of the current weather patterns, nothing new there.

But man is his own worst enemy.
He continues to effect the topography of the land and wonders why there are floods and other disasters.
He builds on natural flood planes and blames climate change for houses being flooded out.
He changes the course of some rivers, cuts down massive forests which can absorb carbon and wonders why the world is getting hot!!!!

One weather scientist if USA claims we have reached peak temps as the cooling of the southern ocean is far below any recorded level.
WE are anticipating a fourth La Nina in the last five years the southern ocean being so cool.
