River Mersey

News snippet just been on. The River Mersey has gone from a biological dead river in the 1970's and is now one of the cleanest in the UK.
15 fish species in 2002 were recorded. In 2023 45 species have been recorded.
No doubt there will still be the odd Mersey Trout still around.Mersey Trout.jpg

Good news and a lot of work has been done to improve the water quality, but I suspect a lot of it has been achieved by pollution control being greatly improved.

Similar here in Melbourne with our river the Yara.
All the plastic and other rubbish has been removed.
In London last year we took a trip along the river to Greenwich, must say the river looks very clean.

I remember the Thames being a black sludge, that if you fell into it in London, you would be sent to hospital to be cleaned up. These days there are fish in the river, and you don't come out of the water at Southend looking like a seal, all greasy and grey looking, as we did on a day out when we were kids.
