john he puts the hours at home with the time diferance he has worked himself right up in maersk he has just turned down a job from a differance firm 20 grand over what he gets now? jp

#25 Think it was 1986 when made redundant from a well known North Sea company, and went for an interview with Maersk think it was Liverpool but they had a head office in the
I.O.M. Got the Mensa test and everything. Told I had a job working out of Rio, the crunch was had to wait 3 months , so went back deep sea for nearly a year , foreign flag of course.
Got a phone call when got home from the lowest paid band of mariners offshore in the North Sea, the stand by boats. A job is a job and managed to keep head above water for 3 years with little or no leave. Decided to go where the grass was greener ,should have done it decades before I did. Cheers JS.

When myself and crowd landed in Aberdeen we were more or less penniless in 1988 July 9. Were shut off in hotel with the police for company . Company’s rep said to me Have told the barman you can put on slate , the barman said he didn’t. Was a near mutiny. However the rep for Occidental came into see if we were ok. I explained about the no money honey and he passed his magic credit card. There were nine of us , I woke up in the bath the next morning with still half a bottle remaining , the other eight bottles were all at different
L.L. Marks but their owners at least got a few hours sleep. Those credit cards are fine examples of how to make friends and influence people , especially when they belong to someone else. Cheers JS.

Remember when the biggest problem in the Red Sea was swarms of locusts. Ran through one with R/O up the radar mast fixing scanner, they demolished his Marconi handbook, how we laughed.

Reminds me again of the City Of Ely. We used to break down for hours every day out there, and we'd get those bloody thing eating us. I remember one day calling the bosun, and telling him I was suffering with the bleeders while working on the poop. He told me to take no notice of them and keep working, so I just downed tools and went into the accommodation. He wasn't pleased because so did all the other deck crew. You couldn't get rid of them if there was no air movement and the boat was just standing there.
