Re: Oppenhiemer
220,000 died in the Atomic Bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Estimates of an invasion of the Japanese mainland calculate would have cost 10.8 million lives both Allied and Japanese. Under an order by the Japanese High Command that if invaded they would execute all Allied POWs. Some 100,000 included in the above figure. Do the math and for every person killed by the atomic bombs, about 48 lives were saved per person killed. Quite apart from ending WW2 in mid 1945 not 1946. Based on these figures in about a week or so with no atomic bomb attack, the same number would have died in an invasion. One other plus is that the world knows the horror of nuclear war. Without Hiroshima and Nagasaki we would not be here. The use of nuclear weapons by Putin because of this has probably stayed Putin's hand in Ukraine.

Re: Oppenhiemer
When one thinks back to the war years , how different the world was. Soldiers used to go home on leave complete with rifle and bayonet . The uk was a different uk then and could expect an invasion any day of the week. Can one think of today’s soldiers being allowed home armed to the teeth. They would likely be mugged by some of the clientele roaming the streets, of course most of that clientele didn’t exist in those days. The little darlings would have been in detention camps if any such people existed then. JS

agree a small minority cause majority of problems, although I believe there are lots of low level crimes committed because there is no deterrent.
