We had a case here some years ago of a young lad who fled Melbourne as he thought he was being discriminated against.
Arrived in Sydney and spent a good few hours in a bar close to the Rocks.
No where to sleep for the night he climbed into a dumpster full of paper.
At some time that dumpster was collected and he was a bit broken up about it.
    Headlines in Melbourne paper ..
"Man goes to Sydney to avoid the Melbourne crush"

No, I am no expert! I just would not form an opinion of a place, on one unfortunate incident. I have paid off in Liverpool twice, Elder Dempster & PSNC. On both occasions as the only Cockney on board, I had time to kill until catching the midnight train from Lime St to London. On the first occasion I went into a dock side pub, name long forgotten, to find sawdust on the floor and a spittoon in the corner, they were mainly dockers & seamen, but no agro, just a bit of friendly banter on both sides, On the second occasion, I was waiting outside Lime St Station, directly opposite a Chinese restaurant, when there was a hell of a commotion outside of it. A lad came running out with a Chinese man in pursuit waving a chopper. They disappeared from sight. I never knew the outcome as it was close to train time. I did not feel the need to slag Liverpool off on either occasion. Firstly, although the pub was rough, it had a great atmosphere. I found the second incident highly hilarious, straight out of the Beano or Dandy (as they were before PC)comics.

Shipped out with quite a few Scousers, mostly good lads, all thought they were the next Billy Fury!

I sailed with a lot of Scousers , and always love the sense of humour. Even the bum I encountered in the pub mate me laugh, he asked for a figgy, which I gave him, he then asked for one for his ear,,then when I gave him that one, he said I,ve got two ears mate,,,, how could you not laugh.

Frank , all areas are dodgy at times. How many times has the Worlds End Pub been burnt down over the years.

    It’s cursed.
It’s had a few fires and incidents over the years.
I guess someone didn’t like the ale.

Not me by the way I remember it as having been a friendly place. The girls found my accent amusing , not often did I not pull in the Worlds End. Last time I saw it it was just a burnt out shell , maybe around 85?

Not often did I see trouble in Dock road pubs in Liverpool, Birkenhead and Seacombe different matter, they still eat their own young.

As seafarers you soon knew what pubs to aviod in Birkenhead . Some along the dock road , Corporation road not bad but one called the Paciffic Hotel not far from park station even the police would tell you to give it a miss. North Hotel in Birkenhead North by the station was another one.

The pubs in ports back then were so different to any today, though most of the good ones we knew are long gone.
Southampton at one time had close to 50 within ear shot of the docks, can count most now on two hands.

Great places such as the Horse and Groom , rough but never recall seeing a fight in there.
The JB, far better now than it ever was, but some of the others such as Scullards all gone.
