    Default Oxfam Relief

Oxfam Relief , See on the news are trying out a 4 day week with no drop in wages . When you think that seamen when I retired from offshore vessels were on an 84 hour week makes one wonder how these mathematicians are able to work out an hourly rate. JS

The idea of the 4 day week is to allow for more family time , I believe the 8 hour day becomes a 10 hour day, many are already putting in longer than their contracted hours, Ask a Nurse.

Shorter working week is fine in concept.
But more time at home may see the need for more money, extra fee time comes with a price tag.

According to the media there is no drop in wages ,same money just less hours . What happens when the next wage rise comes round is anyone’s guess . JS

As said in a previous post about strike action and the Australian maritime unions had at one time to give up the carriage of a cook to obtain their target . The value of bargaining power is always there during disputes. Another one was the leave ratios . When I came here in 1991 the leave ratio offshore was 1.153 days Off for every day on .That 0.153 days off May not sound much but over a year comes to being better in my pocket than the shipowners.
Sometimes people do not realise that the villain in the piece is not the unions . A good union has to fight with what it has to offer .The employer 9 times out of 10 can starve those looking for better conditions out of the picture , this other side reporting never happens. For the president of France to just up the retiring age and interfere with Industry , and having a background of Banking, has probably picked up more than he can chew, to interfere with old ground set rules he is probably well out of his depth. True to a point.
But if the age is not upped then there may be a situation where there are not enough funds for the pension.
People now live longer then ever, there has to be monies to fund them.
When the pension was first introduced in UK it was said by those who did so that the gov would never need to pay as no one lived to that age then.
The age being 65, look at it now, average is closer to 80.

#7, John life expectency in the UK & other European countries has dropped for the first time in a decade.

Life expectancy in the UK has fallen by a full year because of the high number of deaths caused by coronavirus, a new report has found. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found that life expectancy in Britain fell from 81.4 years in 2019 to 80.4 years in 2020.

In the UK& Europe as in other western style countries the birth rate has dropped. Modern parents are not having enough children. UK average is 1.7 children per family.

For the fifth consecutive year, the number of live births in 2020 for England and Wales decreased to 613,936, the lowest since 2002. Since the most recent peak in 2012, the number of live births dropped by 15.9%. The total fertility rate (TFR) for England and Wales.

So it will mean fewer people entering the work place so less to go into the national pension pot. So either pay more or retire later.
When you look at the figures above (depends on the source??) no wonder retirement age needs to rise, if we want to maintain a reasonable standard of life.

This will open a can of worms no doubt. But Asian families breed more than non Asian families so they will over time gain more influence in the running of the country. Look at the numbers here in Government. Three out of four of the highest rank government ministers are asian or of mixed race. Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary and the Home Secretary.
So the can of worms, how serious are the government in there determination of stopping illegal immigration?? They will nit pick who stays and who goes back. But like it or not that is were your next generation will enter the work place from. So IF they earn a decent wage and pay their fair share of taxes this may slow down the rise in retirement age.
Problem is though, a lot of immigrants will end up working for greedy & unscrupulous employers.
