    Johny.
My wife worked at the Farmers for two years in the fifties, we used to take our kids there to see shows on the upper floor they saw the Chip Monks there. Every Christmas time Farmers had a big parade down Queen street. As for earthquakes, we lived in Christchurch for twelve months, went back to Auckland, got sick of the bed moving like it was on a sea, even in Auckland there were tremors not only in the bed LoL

Was in the middle of a big one in Christchurch boxing day 2010.
Next year they had the big one.

One thing missing from the recovery, no army there to assist.
In most countries when such a natural disaster hits the armed forces give a hand.
Maybe they do not have such now!!

    Hello,

There was a big earthquake in Turkey in 1999. The then Government introduced an ,'Earthquake Tax'. This was to protect Telecommunications and Buildings. Buildings were to be made earthquake -proof as well as having full contingency plans in the way of Shelters etc. in the event of another disaster.

Over the past 23 years, his tax has generated £30 BILLION ...........so where is it President Erdogan??? Was it siphoned off to fund other Government projects ? Just asking the question.

Elections coming up soon. That might focus your mind, Mr. President, but you probably have lots of answers to these questions. Are you listening as well President Assad?

We in the West (we do not care about ethnicity nor Religion) are putting our hands in our pockets to help Turkey and Syria. Our Government, along with many others, is sending Aid and Critical Care Teams.

    Proud to be British .

Brenda. The Turkish government have just arrested 131 contractors and subcontractors as the apartments built in that city were supposed to be earthquake proof. I would assume some of the 131 (so far) would be building inspectors too. The construction codes were improved and stiff penalties allotted after the last earthquake, however bribery, corruption and kick-backs are a way of life in Turkey.

    Cheers, Rodney

For so many such places corruption and 'brown envelopes' are a way of life.
Pity the poor people with nowhere now and no hope of finding lost relis.
Will take a generation to restore the cities, now over 32,000 dead according to one report.

    .
There was a Turkish Contractor talking to a TV reporter today and he said the cost between obeying the building regulations and not obeying them was minimal, as was the time factor, but you have to stand your ground with officialdom (read what you will into that!), not one of his buildings constructed since the new 2003 regulations has collapsed in any earthquake. Nice to hear about honest people for a change, I have lived in brown envelope countries, but stand your ground and do not pay and you will win in the end

I wouldn't think any building regulations could guarantee total protection against earthquakes, they may help, but such is life. Plus of course, such reactions from politicians and top dogs will always be first to show. Get in first, just in case.

But they could mitigate the damage Johnny and avoid so many deaths, just an observation.

Absolutely Ivan, there would have been many more no doubt, if there were no regulations.
A friend of mine lived in a block of flats up by Canning Town some years back, and they collapsed without an earthquake.

Well the Cladding used on the Grenfield Towers, was that not known to be possibly dangerous?? so not just dodgy dealings abroad.

It is amazing that they are still finding people alive. Healthy Humans can survive without water in cooler conditions for 7 days. Sadly time is really running out now for anyone still burried. Just so sad for so many.
